Königsplatz

This neo-classical square was built by the architect Leo von Klenze between 1817 - 1862 on the orders of King Ludwig I. In the north is the corinthian style Glyptothek in the south the ionic style building housing the State Antiquities Collection and in the west the doric style Propyläen gateway, based on the gates of the Acropolis in Athens, is a memorial to the greek war of independance of the Wittelsbacher King Otto of Greece. Altogther they form the "Athens on the Isar" a wonderful Temple for the arts.

The Nazis paved the the previously grass covered square to use it for parades and party meetings. A monument which had been erected in the east commemorating the victims of the putsche in 1923 was destroyed in 1945. The square was then used as a parking space until it was finally grassed over again in 1988.

Today this grandiose square is used in summer as the scene of open-air concerts, operas and film presentations.
